Points 4625

2011

QSO's 1137

4th in Open Section.

Although eventful in terms in performance of some of our gear, a very enjoyable contest.

My thanks to the operators Dave G0LZL, Carsten G0SYP, Michael G4OCR and Mike M6MPC.

Plus all the members who helped to build the station and loaned equipment. As always it's these guys who make the event possible but don't share in the pleasure of operating the station.

My thanks also to the visitors who came along to support us despite and terrible weather we 'enjoyed' over the weekend!

Looking back @ CQ WPX CW Contest

After an excellent weekend, both weather and radio wise, I can share the 'unedited' scores for this years WPX CW Contest when we took advantage of the 'Q' call-signs being available, as did a few others!

We used GQ8SRS.

2012
QSO's 4640
Score 13.4M points

2011
QSO's 3732
Score 8.25M points

So with improved conditions an excellent result from the contest group with operators G0SYP, G4OCR, G0LZL and myself.

10m was open for long periods of time into USA, South America and lower bands gave many QSOs with China & Japan. (Since the G5O group was formed, I haven't heard as many JAs as there were this weekend.)

20m was the main scoring band closely followed by 15m where Carsten operated almost entirely for a 12 hour shift!

My thanks to the operators and as always to the band of willing helpers who assist with the build/dismantle work and supported the ops throughout the contest without the pleasure of operating themselves.

Also our thanks to the SRS members who turned out to visit us at various times throughout the weekend.

The next contest is the RSGB 24 hour CW NFD taking place this coming weekend 3/4th June, at Common Barn Farm when we will be representing Stockport Radio Society in the open section using call G3LX/P.

To meet the contest requirements we have to clear the site of all gear we plan to use and then re-assemble the station within 24 hours of the 4.00pm Saturday start.

We will be doing this on Friday and Saturday and any help available would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Logging Programs with Pete M1PTR

On Tuesday 15th May, members gathered to witness another excellent presentation by Pete M1PTR. This time the topic was logging programs, a subject which every present was grateful to receive.

Pete began by describing the use of paper logs then on to the many computer based and portable products available on the market both free and for a small cost. This included general logging programs such as Logger32, but also those dedicated to contest operating such as Wintest.

Following the usual break for tea and general discussion, there then followed a practical demonstration of some of the programs employed by Pete and assisted by Tom M0DCG.

GX6LD

Members of DDARS enjoyed operating GX6LD from Golcar Lily Day last Saturday. We had lots of visitors including Andy M1LOL and Ray M1REK both from Stockport ARC, Fred M3CTW and Jim Fish G4MH, always a welcome visitor at this event.

We used the Icom IC-706MKIIG with dipoles for 40m and 20m and although band conditions were extremely poor we still managed to work 97 stations mainly on 40m, although Robert M0PIE did venture onto 2m using CW.

The sun shone all day which brought the crowds out in numbers and we were treated to Morris Dancing, brass band and lots of other trade stalls and attractions. By the way we were operating from Golcar Brewery which must be one of the best QTH’s ever and we rounded of a most enjoyable day with a few glasses of the local bitter.

A Question of Balance

Our latest meeting, Tuesday 1st May 2012, saw members gather to hear Bernard Naylor's presentation surrounding the world of baluns.

For over an hour Bernard entertained the gathering with theories and practical examples of baluns and chokes for use with antennas. Questions were posed by the members and the meeting continued way past 10pm.

Members gather and Bernard G3SHF makes final preparations. Barrie G6GUT looks on.
